Frequently Asked Questions...
How did my CD/DVD-RW drive disappear from my computer (PLEASE HELP-URGENT)?
This just happened some time yesterday. I don't have the money to RE-install it. I have a 2 1/2-yr. old Dell Inspiron 6000 with Windows XP. Is there any way to retrieve it? & was this possibly caused by a virus?
& also, I went to the help section of my computer, & it said that my (D:) drive device is BLOCKED. What does that mean? How do I UNblock it? Since yesterday, I was SO frustrated I had a panic attack & almost cried. I NEED to save my research work on my DVD-RW drive. I have this work saved on my hard drive. I put it in a new, seperate folder on the hard drive on the desktop location. How can I bring back my D: drive without losing my saved work? How can I back up these files if I'm missing my D: drive?
Sorry for asking more than 3 times, but no one is answering my question. Sorry for so many "sub"questions within THIS quesiton. I really need urgent help. Fast!
Answer:
Here is another trick if your CD/DVD shows up in the Device Manager (Right click on my computer and select Properties and then choose the Hardware tab).
If it does, uninstall both the drive and the ATA/ATAPI controllers for it here. Reboot your computer. The driver for the optical drive and the controllers are part of Windows and will reinstall themselves when you reboot. You should get a "Found new hardware" message.
Also, don't keep using your disk with your valuable files on it to do these tests, use another one so your files are safe.
If your optical drive does not show up in Device Manager, you may have a faulty drive. Check in the BIOS of your computer to make sure the drive shows up there. If it is not there the drive is bad or you have a faulty connection to it.
