Answer:
When Mass Effect first came out on PC I had a Geforce 8500 GT, which is under the system requirements. While that wasn't the greatest experience it was playable at low resolutions. The 8600 GTS is considerably better than what I had back then so the game is definitely playable at medium resolutions.
I now have a Geforce 9600 GT and the game runs fine but does get occasional framedrops when playing at 1600x900, so don't expect a perfect experience. It will run OK. Mass Effect 2 actually runs a lot smoother than the original.
