Frequently Asked Questions...

Computer won't boot up...?

I'm having some computer problems (just in time for the holidays), I don't know much and need help.

Okay, so all of the sudden my mouse wasn't working right. I changed the batteries and it still wouldn't work. Then I tried to restart my computer, it wouldn't restart. So, frustrated, I did the only thing I knew how to do, turn it off manually by pressing the big old power button.

Then I turned it on. It started to boot up, but then made a weird beeping noise and wouldn't get past the loading screen.

Now, knowing what little I do, I've made a hypothesis that I fried my processor. Seeing as its winter break and I was overjoyed to be out of school, I proceded to play Medieval II Total War on almost all high settings for basically the entire day.

By the way, here are my specs:

P4 @3.6GHz
Radeon X1900 XTX
2 GB RAM
160 GB Hard Drive
Crappy Dell Motherboard

Come on computer gurus, some help would really be appreciated.

Answer:

You can't break a computer by running programs on them. That's what they were made to do. If the program is to much for a PC, it will lock up (like yours did) and simply give up, but it causes no damage. The beeping sound you heard are likely BIOS beep codes. ( this tells you the computer is working) For every function a computer must do during start up, there is a beep code that you can use to diagnose issues during start up. Yours may be an issue with the video bus loading, which is popular with computers freezing up when playing hardcore. Clearing the BIOS will let the computer start from scratch and reload the BIOS settings. To do this, see:

I think you just pooped it out and it needs to rest a bit. Leave it off for a while and let the RAM clear. Then go back and start it. Keep trying to start it. Sometimes it takes a number of restarts to revive a tired computer. Good luck:)
