Frequently Asked Questions...
is this a good buy for a dell pc?
its a Dell optiplex tower pentium 4 pc, comes with p4 cpu, 512mb memory, 40gb hard drive and dvd rom. It has windows xp-pro coa.
It's listed as a true tower because we can install up to 2 optical drives. It has secure compartment for up to 3 hard drives. It has 4 standard height PCI slots and one 8x agp slot especially for 3-d games and professional graphics work.
Most of what I just typed I do not understand. So if someone can please break it down for me in laymens terms, I would appreciate it.
We will be receiving this in a few days. My wife bought it refurbished off from ebay for $102.50 with free shipping.
pretty much our whole intention is to surf the web and allow our 8year old to play games. As the wife and I have pretty good dell laptops with wireless, we hardly ever use the pc.
Answer:
If all you need to do is word process and surf the internet, that computer will be fine.
P4 (pentium 4) is the processor - it's quite outdated as of now, but served me just fine when I was younger. At one time, we were all on Pentium 2's and life was just fine.
512 MB of memory refers to the RAM. That's not a whole lot to work with - you might want to upgrade to 2GB of RAM (about 4 times as much) for your computer to feel more snappy.
The AGP slot is an antequated slot which you can stick video cards into - we've since moved onto PCI Express.
Overall for 100 dollars, not a bad deal I suppose - it will get the job done. Don't expect it to do much else.
