I need help upgrading a processor on my dell computer!?
I have a Dell Optiplex GX280, with the following specs
4gb DDR2 SD RAM
1GB ATI Radeon 9600GT Video Card
2 - 1 TB Hard Drives
but just a P4 2.8 GHZ
Everything on the computer is fine, but the processor has got to go!
Can I just buy a processor and put it on the computer? I know some may say just buy a new computer and put the extras on that. I actually got all the extras given to me and I dont want to spend money on buying a brand new machine.
Please let me know if I can just simply take the CPU out of the motherboard and put a new CPU on it.

Well, you definitely can't buy just any old processor and stick it in. For one, there's AMD and Intel, and obviously your comp supports Intel only. Also, there are different socket types.
Generally, a P4 is not compatible with a dual core processor. The socket types are different. From doing some reading, I am not seeing anything that says that your motherboard supports dual core technology. I could be wrong but this is solely based on what I am reading.
Unfortunately, a mobo upgrade would be the main option for you. Which means that you have to upgrade everything else... sorry =/
