Frequently Asked Questions...
Dell optiplex gx270 processor upgrade to Pentium D?
Hi, I have a Optiplex gx270 with P4 2.6 Ghz. I would like to upgrade to Pentium Dual core processor (not Core Duo, not Core2Duo). Is it possible? is it worth the upgrade?
If yes, what is the best processor model in Pentium D?
bcos my xp os is struggling to keep up. even after several clean install, memory upgrade.
Answer:
You technically could upgrade it, but I don't think you would be happy with the upgrade. I wouldn't dump a dime into it if it was mine. It's socket 478, and pentium-d's for that socket are pretty pricey for what you would get.

For what you would spend on that processor, you would be much better off just suffering until you can just buy a new computer.
You could buy this processor for roughly $50 and not be happy with the money spent, or you could save it and get an HP Pavilion with a dual core pentium (basically a core-2 duo) for about $350 and be much happier with it.

It would be an upgrade if you can do it, but I would suggest not dumping a single dime into that dinosaur. Save your cash and work on getting a new computer.
