>Well, there are two models for your computer, a slimline type and a regular mid-tower. The ST model is slimline type and the MT is the regular mid-tower. I am going to assume you have the mid-tower. Here is the Dell Manual for your hardware:

You see that you have two SATA connectors on the motherboard for hard disks. So this means that you need to buy a SATA hard drive (do NOT buy an IDE type hard disk).
I hope you know that you will need to have a copy of the Operating System. I don't know if a set of restore CD's for Dell will restore the operating system, but if you take out the current hard disk as the primary hard disk, you will HAVE to have a copy of the operating system...you can buy an OEM copy from Newegg for $99.99

Also, you will need to download all the drivers from Dell for your computer and burn the drivers to a CD.
Also, you should run the Microsoft Windows 7 upgrade advisor and find out if your computer is ready to accept Windows 7. The Advisor will tell you if you can install Windows 7 on your computer (I do not know if you can or not or what you have now):

After installing the operating system, then load whatever drivers you need for the motherboard and other hardware. If you need the SATA controller during operating installation, this should be one of the drivers you download from Dell. Make sure your driver CD is available during the operating system installation process in case WIndows 7 installer requires any drivers, SATA driver or otherwise.
